Filling your first government exam application is confusing: which exam, which post, what qualification, where is the notification, what documents? This guide walks you through it in order — with the openings that are live right now in Karnataka.

Step 1 — Match posts to YOUR qualification

Rule of thumb: always read the qualification column of the official notification — it lists the exact degree/discipline accepted, and age limits vary by category (relaxations apply for OBC/SC/ST/Cat-1, women in some posts, ex-servicemen and PwD candidates).

First-timer tip: apply to 2–3 exams per season rather than betting everything on one — the experience of actually sitting an exam is itself preparation for the next one.

Step 3 — Prepare your documents NOW

• SSLC marksheet (proof of DOB), PUC/Degree marksheets and certificates
• Caste/income certificate (if claiming reservation) — issued in the current validity format
• Passport-size photos (recent, as per the notification's specifications) and scanned signature
• Aadhaar, active mobile number and email linked to it
• Hyderabad-Karnataka 371 certificate (if eligible) — it changes your cutoff list

Scan everything, name the files properly, and keep them in one folder — most first-timer application rejections come from photo/signature size and format errors, not from eligibility.

Step 4 — Start preparation the boring-but-effective way

1. Download the official syllabus for your chosen exam (kpsc.kar.nic.in / kea.kar.nic.in / department site).
2. Solve 5 years of previous papers before buying any book — you'll immediately see which topics actually matter.
3. Fixed daily window: 2–3 focused hours beat 8 distracted ones. Add daily current affairs (Karnataka + national) from Day 1.
4. One revision sheet per topic — your future self will thank you.
