For most candidates, the application fee is the last step — and the step where panic peaks: "money deducted but not confirmed", "which payment mode is safe?", "what if I pay twice?". A few disciplined habits make this step boring — and boring is exactly what you want, because a payment problem in the last days of the window can cost you the entire application.
Know the fee before you pay
Two minutes of checking saves hours of stress later. Read the fee table in the official notification and note: the fee for your category, any exemptions (some categories, ex-servicemen and special groups pay reduced or nil fees), and whether there is a separate last date for fee payment (it is sometimes different from the application last date). When the payment page opens, the portal shows the applicable fee after you select your category — if the amount shown does not match what you expect, stop and check your category selection before paying.
Pay only through the official portal
The golden rule: pay inside the official application portal's own payment gateway, initiated from your own login. Practically, this means: use the portal link from the official notification or the recruitment body's website, complete the payment in the same flow, and never pay through "agents", personal UPI IDs, or WhatsApp "fee help" numbers. No government recruitment collects fees through individuals. Fake "fee payment links" circulate on messaging apps in every recruitment season — ignore them completely, no matter how official they look.
Safe payment practices
- Use your own bank account, UPI or card — avoid borrowing someone else's account for "speed".
- Check that you are on the official domain (https) and that the gateway page shows the correct recruitment name and amount.
- Avoid public Wi-Fi for payments; use your own mobile data if possible.
- Never share OTP with anyone — not even a caller claiming to be from the "helpdesk". No genuine official needs your OTP.
- Keep the browser tab open until you see the confirmation message; do not close it at the bank page.
- Note the transaction ID / reference number immediately.
If payment fails
| Situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| Money not deducted, payment failed | Wait a few minutes and retry from the portal; check no pending session remains |
| Money deducted, portal shows "Pending" | Wait 24–48 hours — most payments auto-reconcile. Keep a screenshot and the transaction ID. If still pending, email the helpdesk with the proof |
| Paid twice (duplicate) | Usually auto-refunded. Email the helpdesk with both transaction IDs; do not pay a third time |
| Portal crashed mid-payment | Log back in and check the application status before attempting payment again |
After paying — the checklist
- Confirm on the portal (not just the bank SMS) that payment is recorded.
- Check the application status shows fully submitted / paid.
- Download the acknowledgment or receipt PDF; save it in your documents folder and email a copy to yourself.
- Note the fee-payment last date separately in your tracker — do not assume it matches the application deadline.
Protect yourself from fee fraud
Every season brings the same scams: calls offering "fee assistance", messages saying "your payment failed, pay here", and sites charging money just to "confirm" your fee. Remember three truths: no genuine officer asks for OTP or payment over a call or chat; viewing or confirming a payment never costs extra; and any "guaranteed seat" offer is fraud. If targeted, report it to the authorities and warn your study group.
Bottom line
Boring is safe: know your fee, pay on the official portal, keep every reference number, and handle failures calmly with proof. Five minutes of care at the payment step protects months of preparation behind it.
